How do glasses get so dirty

How can you clean your eyeglasses then? Gently blow on the lenses to remove any surface debris. Once the potentially damaging particles are out of the way, spray your cleaner or use your wipe to clean off the lenses.

Use the microfiber cloth to dry them. If your lenses have a coating, like anti-reflective, make sure your chosen spray or wipe is okay to use on them. Some coatings can be damaged by cleaners so it is important to read the label and choose the right one for your lenses. The final thing you should have on hand for your newly-clean glasses is their case.

If they are protected by the case, they cannot be scratched by random debris or get accidentally pushed off the table you set them on. If you do wear glasses all the time, they should still rest in their case when you go to sleep. They are also known as anti-glare lenses. There is a myriad of these lenses on the market from various laboratories and each optometry practice has their lab preference.

The thing is that some anti-glare lenses are more prone to smudging than others. Also as the lenses age, some will degrade more than others and make it even harder to keep clean. A good reflection free lens will be smudge resistant, water repellant, protect against uv, dust repellant, anti-static and anti-scratch — which to you and me means less cleaning of lenses and the best possible vision. Glasses also get dirty if you have a tendency to have oily skin, dry flaky skin, if you wear make-up, or if you use moisturiser on your face or hands.

Dust can build up on your glasses overnight. Monitor it, you will be surpised. Some of this natural daily debris is going to appear on your glasses. Depending on your facial structure, some frames will sit closer to your eyes than others.

Some prescriptions are also thicker than others and the thicker ones may sit closer to the eyes too. It is important that you include the care of your spectacles in to your daily routine. I would recommend that you clean your glasses every day at mealtimes! Its easy to do and its so worth it!

November 23, PM Subscribe How do I stop my eyeglasses from getting so dirty in the first place? I read previous questions about cleaning glasses. What I want to know is this: is there any way to stop them from getting so dusty in the first place?

I wear my glasses every minute I'm awake, and keep them in a case at night. I wash them using either just warm water and a soft cloth, or some of that spray stuff they gave me when I bought them. I wash them several times a day, and yet they're dirty again within an hour -- even when I'm not going outside and my toddler isn't grabbing them. I've worn glasses for over 30 years, most with anti-glare coating like these ones, and I don't remember a pair ever being such a smudge-magnet.

Is there anything I can put on them to repel dust? A nice coat of Pledge, perhaps? Oh my god, don't use Pledge - but I'll assume you're joking about that. But I suspect what will help even more is if you keep the skin on your face really moisturized with some sort of lotion before you put your glasses on.

What a lot of people think is dust is actually bits of flaky skin, especially this time of year when humidity is down and people's skin gets drier. You just have to get used to cleaning them regularly.

What kind of dirt? Dust or smudges? Sometimes my eyelashes will grow long enough to brush against the lens, and this can leave a smudge. The solution is to trim the eyelash. Or perhaps you have a lot of oily dust in the air?
