Wadi Musa is a great town to stay in if you are visiting Petra. It is about a mile from the tourist center and you can easily drive there. I highly recommend getting to Petra early in the day to avoid the crowds and the heat.
If you want a real meal though, I would suggest eating in Wadi Musa. There are lots of great restaurants that your hotel can point you to. You should at least stay 2 full days in order to be able to visit the main attractions of Petra, 3 Days would be even better to visit, Little Petra, Al Dhair monastry from the backdoor entrance and the main Petra attractions through alsiq. After many visits we still enjoyed Petra not just the architecture but also nature combined with different color settings depending on the time of the day.
We had tea at different locations in the park and it gave us time to enjoy the sun. No other guests at the hotel. Breakfast was in a box and very poor quality of prepackaged food except for a cucumber and a tomato, evening meal was ordered as a takeout and had to pay 2. Would have been better had we been told that all restaurants were completely closed in the area as were the bigger hotels. Checked out a day early so only stayed one night. Room basic but clean.
However a great location for Petra entrance. Petra is an amazing experience that everyone should have at least once in their lives. Jordanians as a whole are extremely friendly and polite people, but the Bedouins at Petra are obnoxious.
I understand that they've been hit extremely hard with covid and the lack of tourists, but the following and yelling at us was absurd. The minute my partner and I walked into the siq entrance, we were followed and constantly being harrashed to take a camel ride, donkey ride or go to the view from the top. On our 2nd day, we caved and agreed to the view from the top because hey, why not.
The "guide", Mohamed, led us up some steep rocks on the right hand side of the view and not 30 seconds up this hill, the police and other bedouins start yelling at us and waving to come back down. I'm not one to mess with police, especially in a foreign country, so we go back down.
At this point, a full on screaming match ensues between the police and the local bedouins. One group of guys come up and tell us they're the park rangers and they want our passports. My partner says to them "ok so let me ask you something. You've said one thing, he's said another, and those 3 guys over there all said something different.
